Have a vegetable garden (by Raoul)
grow your own tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini.
Learn to barter (by raoul)
Trade services and goods for other services and goods, without money
Learn to make some basic foods for cheaper than store-bought (by Raoul)
My girlfriend and her extended family are all into making their own salsa, yogurt, hummus, etc. and they share and trade with each other. Home-made yogurt is easily 1/4 of the price in the stores, and tastes so much better!
Buy things in Bulk (by LCD from Taos, NM)
you can save a huge amount by buying the biggest size product. If needed, keep the smaller bottle or packaging, and refill it with the large product.
Buy Generic Equivalent (by LCD from Taos, NM)
there are always alternatives to the name brand available.
Medicine for instance, will be an identical match, other than the product name, the active ingredients will be exactly the same.
Household products, such as cleaners, shampoos, even food products have generic equivalent. By checking the list of ingredients, you can determine what it has in it and what is missing.
Make sure the generic brand is deeply discounted (at least 30%) or shop somewhere that has the lowest prices.
Cut SOS pads in half (by RunsWithScissors from Clevelan)
Buy the regular size SOS scouring pads and then cut them in half with scissors. Use a half of one and then throw it out instead of having a whole one, partially used, sitting around. They last twice as long this way.
